What an Astronaut Taught Us About Living Faith in the Secular World

By Jo Holt

Half a century after humans last flew to the moon, NASA’s Artemis II crew made history — and one astronaut made it personal.

Minutes before the Orion spacecraft Integrity slipped behind the moon — about to lose all contact with Earth for nearly 40 minutes — pilot Victor Glover didn’t talk about velocity or trajectory. He talked about love.

“As we continue to unlock the mysteries of the cosmos,” Glover told ground control on April 6, “I would like to remind you of one of the most important mysteries there on Earth — and that’s love.” He then quoted Christ’s greatest commandment: love God with everything you are, and love your neighbor as yourself.

No apology. No hesitation. Just faith, spoken clearly, at the edge of the universe.

Faith Has Always Looked Up

Catholics have long had a deep relationship with the cosmos. We believe in a God who created the universe — every star, every galaxy, every mystery still waiting to be discovered. Space exploration isn’t a threat to our faith. It’s a window into the grandeur of the One we serve.

But here’s the question Glover’s words quietly ask us: If an astronaut can profess his faith before millions of people, on a secular mission, in the silence before the dark side of the moon — why are we afraid to do the same in our own businesses?

The Fear We Don’t Talk About

NASA is not a Christian organization. And yet, Victor Glover — serving on a public mission, representing a public agency — made sure the people around him knew what he believed and why it mattered.

Many of us lead secular companies. We work alongside employees, vendors, and customers who may not share our faith. And so we stay quiet. We compartmentalize. We convince ourselves that faith is private, that mixing belief and business makes people uncomfortable.

But that silence has a cost. It costs our teams the authentic leadership they deserve. It costs our companies the mission that makes the work meaningful.

Ready to Cast a Vision Without Fear?

In our program CARING BY DESIGN, we walk business owners through the 5 fears that keep faith-driven leaders from showing up fully — in their companies and in their communities. Because leading with love isn’t just a spiritual calling. It’s a business strategy rooted in truth.

Victor Glover didn’t wait for the perfect moment. He spoke up at 40,000 miles from Earth, seconds before going dark.

You don’t have to go to the moon to find your voice. You just have to be willing to use it.
