READ SCRIPTURE: ST. PAUL WORKS HARD TO SUPPORT THOSE LESS FORTUNATE
1 Thess. 2:9 | Acts 20:34-35
You recall, brothers, our toil and drudgery.
Working night and day in order not to burden any of you,
we proclaimed to you the gospel of God.
You know well that these very hands have served my needs and my companions.
In every way I have shown you that by hard work of that sort we must help the weak,
and keep in mind the words of the Lord Jesus who himself said,
“It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
REFLECTION: A DISCIPLE WHO PRAYS
Every successful organization is built upon a solid foundation of core values and imbued with a strong internal culture. These core values and culture are inspired by the heart of the CEO. As the leader of a consecrated company, you are called to rise above mere temporal success in the marketplace and strive for eternal success.
What was once a horizontal business horizon for your company now expands to include a transcendent element. His Way At Work encourages you to include this vertical and eternal dynamic within your company, but doing so will require God’s help.
This new pathway cannot be created out of thin air. It will be discovered through your personal prayer and offerings to God. You, as a business leader, need God’s grace! Without a relationship to God through prayer, you simply cannot expect to accomplish the goals of a consecrated company. We are surrounded by a modern secular culture that suggests we can solve any problem through technology, hard work, and intellect, implying we don’t need God’s assistance.
While it’s true that God created us to co-create and improve the world, our true mission—building Christ’s Kingdom—requires divine grace. We need prayer, and we need grace. Jesus himself exemplified the need for prayer, frequently withdrawing to connect with His Father, especially before important events. If the incarnate Son of God found it necessary to pray, why do many of us think we can thrive without a mature prayer life?
We should be making prayers and offerings daily to God. As baptized Christians, we can and should offer to God all that we are, all that we have, and all that we do, including our company. In the Catechism, we are told that we are a holy and royal priesthood. It says:
On entering the People of God through faith and Baptism, one receives a share in this people’s unique, priestly vocation: “Christ the Lord, high priest taken from among men, has made this new people ‘a kingdom of priests to God, his Father.’ The baptized, by regeneration and the anointing of the Holy Spirit, are consecrated to be a spiritual house and a holy priesthood.”
– Catechism of the Catholic Church, 784
NOVENA PRAYER
Lord Jesus Christ, I adore you with all my heart. Confiding in your deep, personal love for me, I make this novena in preparation for the consecration of my business to your glory and your service. I ask you to purify my heart and to make the consecration a sincere act of love and devotion that redounds to your glory, now and in the years to come. I humbly ask you to protect my business and all those who are or will be connected with it in any way: the leadership team, the employees, the clients, customers, and all who come into contact with it. Make this business a true source of consolation for you, a channel of your powerful and limitless love, and an instrument that serves to comfort, strengthen, and inspire many, especially those most in need of your mercy.
Trusting in your promise that anything that we ask of the Father in your name shall be granted, I humbly present to you today the following prayer requests:
[State your personal request(s) for your business here].
Do with my business whatever you will. You have given it to me. I return it to you.
To you be glory, praise, and thanksgiving for all eternity!
CONCLUDING PRAYERS
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be world without end. Amen.
O Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you.
In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
