{"id":10613,"date":"2026-10-23T11:17:42","date_gmt":"2026-10-23T15:17:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hwaw.com\/?p=10613"},"modified":"2026-10-23T11:17:44","modified_gmt":"2026-10-23T15:17:44","slug":"subsidiarity-decision-making","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hwaw.com\/pt\/subsidiarity-decision-making\/","title":{"rendered":"Subsidiarity: Putting Decisions Where They Belong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Church states the principle of subsidiarity in a single sentence: &#8220;a community of a higher order should not interfere in the internal life of a community of a lower order, depriving the latter of its functions, but rather should support it in case of need and help to co-ordinate its activity with the activities of the rest of society, always with a view to the common good&#8221; (CCC 1883). Pope Pius XI gave the classic version of it in 1931, in <em>Quadragesimo Anno<\/em>, with the state and civil society in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That sentence has two halves, and most of us remember only the first. The first restrains the people at the top from taking over what others can do, and the second obliges them to help when help is needed. A company of twenty people is much smaller than a nation, but both halves apply to anyone who holds authority in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Is Subsidiarity in Catholic Social Teaching?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Subsidiarity sits alongside solidarity and the common good among the principles of Catholic social teaching. His Way At Work&#8217;s Foundations in Faith study puts it simply: &#8220;At its core, subsidiarity simply means respecting and empowering human freedom.\u201d It also names the business version of the problem: &#8220;In a business environment, the opposite of subsidiarity is micro-managing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same study warns about a second way to get it wrong, which is giving so much support that people come to depend on you. The word comes from the Latin <em>subsidium<\/em>, help. Catholic subsidiarity offers the kind of help that strengthens people and then steps back so they can carry the work themselves. For a wider look at these principles, see <a href=\"https:\/\/hwaw.com\/pt\/why-catholic-social-teaching-matters\/\">Por que a Doutrina Social da Igreja \u00e9 importante<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Does It Look Like Inside a Company?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His Way At Work&#8217;s clearest working example is the Caring Team. In CARING BY DESIGN, the owner forms a small team of front-line employees to care for their coworkers, their families, and the community, and the guide is emphatic about what the team receives: &#8220;Authority and a budget&#8221;. The team should do its work &#8220;without being micromanaged or overridden&#8221;, and the glossary describes its voting members as &#8220;reflecting decision-making being done as close to those being affected as possible&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Front-line employees get the role because they understand what their coworkers need and are better at vetting requests. When a request comes to the Employee Emergency Assistance Fund, the team decides within a day or two and pays the vendor directly, and the owner wasn\u2019t involved in the decision. <a href=\"https:\/\/hwaw.com\/pt\/care\/\">CUIDADO POR DESIGNO<\/a> walks an owner and his leadership team through building that structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Where Does the Owner Still Belong?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The principle of subsidiarity does not ask the owner to step away. It asks him to do the work only he can do. The owner and his leadership team set the vision, the budget, and the boundaries the team works within, and decisions like pay scales and benefits stay with leadership. If a request falls outside the company&#8217;s vision, its core values, or those boundaries, &#8220;then the answer should be &#8216;No'&#8221;. Ideally, the owner or someone he trusts sits in on the team&#8217;s meetings &#8220;to offer guidance or permission when necessary and requested&#8221;, which is the second half of CCC 1883 in practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Catechism grounds all of this in the way God governs: &#8220;God has not willed to reserve to himself all exercise of power. He entrusts to every creature the functions it is capable of performing, according to the capacities of its own nature&#8221; (CCC 1884).
