Questions Catholic Owners Ask"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Is it a sin to work on Sunday? Working on Sunday is not sinful in itself, and the Church expects that some people will have to, but Catholics are asked to avoid work that hinders the worship, joy, and rest proper to the day when nothing truly requires it (CCC 2185, 2187).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Missing Mass is a separate and weightier matter. The Catechism says those who deliberately fail in the Sunday obligation, without a serious reason, commit a grave sin (CCC 2181). For an owner, the harder questions come after that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Does the Church Ask on Sunday?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Code of Canon Law says the faithful &#8220;are obliged to participate in the Mass&#8221; and &#8220;are to abstain from those works and affairs which hinder the worship to be rendered to God, the joy proper to the Lord&#8217;s day, or the suitable relaxation of mind and body&#8221; (Canon 1247). A Saturday evening vigil Mass satisfies the obligation (Canon 1248). Behind the rule is the conviction that &#8220;human life has a rhythm of work and rest&#8221; (CCC 2184), patterned on God, who &#8220;rested on the seventh day from all the work he had undertaken&#8221; (Gen 2:2).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Is Servile Work?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Older Catholics learned the rule as a ban on &#8220;servile work,&#8221; the term used in the 1917 Code of Canon Law and generally understood as bodily or manual labor. The 1983 Code describes the obligation by its purpose instead, which fits owners whose work happens mostly on a screen. People also call Sunday the Catholic sabbath, though the Catechism says more precisely that &#8220;Sunday fulfills the spiritual truth of the Jewish sabbath&#8221; (CCC 2175).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Can Catholics Work on Sunday?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, when there is real need. &#8220;Family needs or important social service can legitimately excuse from the obligation of Sunday rest,&#8221; provided those excuses do not &#8220;lead to habits prejudicial to religion, family life, and health&#8221; (CCC 2185). The cases owners raise most often:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Emergencies.<\/strong> A burst pipe at a client&#8217;s building or a cooler that fails Sunday morning is a real need. Handle it, and then return to the day.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Restaurants, retail, and hospitality.<\/strong> The Catechism names restaurants and public services among the work that requires some people on Sundays (CCC 2187). Your part is a schedule that protects Mass and rest for the people who work it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Work your family depends on.<\/strong> This can excuse Sunday work, though a season of necessity can quietly become permanent.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sunday email.<\/strong> Ask whether it is needed and whether it pulls anyone else into work. If you open on Sunday, rotate the schedule so the same people are not always working, and build shifts around Mass times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Word for the Tired Owner<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If Sunday has not felt like rest in a long time, you are far from the only owner in that position, and the Church offers this teaching as a gift to you. &#8220;The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath&#8221; (Mk 2:27), and that includes the person who signs the paychecks.
